Today in class, we looked at American actions in Guatemala in the 20th Century, and the impact those actions had.

We read, annotated, and discussed the significance of the following

1. The United Fruit Company in Guatemala (p.160)
2. Bananas – How United Fruit Shaped the World (p.162-163)
3. La United Fruit Co. (p.166-167)
4. Guatemala 1954 (p.164-165)

The unit test will be on Wed. Because I will not be in class on Tues., we will review for the test in class on Monday.

Today in class, we studied four different accounts of the building of the Panama Canal:

1. Modern Marvels - The Panama Canal (questions on p.134-135) We watched through question 8, about 15 min.

3. Powerpoint: Panama Canal cartoons
4. "How Wall Street Created a Nation" (p.136)

How can the same story be told in so many different ways? How does your understanding the history depend on which version you know?

For homework, write or type one paragraph comparing and contrasting the 4 different accounts. 

We, the Filipinos

Today we will be reading "We, the Filipinos" (CP p. 138-140) to understand the experience of America Imperialism from the perspective of the people who were conquered. You will individually read, highlight and annotate the letter. In the groups, you will complete 3 tasks:
1. What questions do you have about the letter? (ask me these questions before you move on)
2. What are the key points of the letters?
3. Compose an American letter in reply to the Filipinos.
