Finally, we will discuss Gandhi as an incredible, but imperfect man. We will also discuss Kashmir, and the impact India and Pakistan’s possession of nuclear weapons has had on South Asia..

Gandhi (continued)

To begin class, you will individually complete the questions based on the biography of Gandhi (p.283). We will then discuss these ideas in a small groups (p.276-277). If time remains, we will begin watching clips of the movie “Gandhi.”

HW: In May, 2017, India Congress MP and writer Shashi Tharoor participated in a debate at Oxford University entitled, "“This House Believes Britain Owes Reparations to her Former Colonies.” Watch his speech, and take detailed notes. Then answer the following questions:

  1. What are his 5 strongest pieces of evidence for why Britain owes Indian reparation?
  2. What questions do you have about his speech, either technical or philosophical? You must come up with at least 3 questions?
  3. Do you believe Britain owes reparations to its former colonies? Why or why not?
If it is helpful, take a look at the article: 3 reasons why Shashi Tharoor's speech at Oxford is a must watch.

Today we will work to complete our research and discussion of the complexities of the British Raj.
We will then begin our discussion of the life and legacy of Mohandas K. Gandhi by reading and discussing one of his most famous quotes (p.278-279). For homework, read “Biography of Mohandas Gandhi” (p.280-282) and spend at least 30 min outside enjoying the beautiful day!

British Rule of India

Today we will begin discussing British rule of India by reading Minute by the Hon'ble
T. B. Macaulay and answering the questions (CP p.264-266)


We will then read about the Great Rebellion of 1857
and watch video of The Great Rebellion from PBS Story of India series (p.268-269).


Finally, we will begin reading and analyzing “The White Man’s Burden” (CP p.272)

For homework, read the story “Shooting An Elephant” and answer  the questions.
It might be easier to print the story. You can either hand-write or type your
answers to the questions. The questions are due on Monday.

The Mughal Empire

We will begin today by watching first 10 minutes of
Story of India: Spice Routes and Silk RoadsYou will take notes, but focus mostly of the
visuals of this clip. It is rare to see people living as they did thousands of years ago.
It’s important to note that the people of the Roman Empire recognized
the advancement of the Indian Civilization in a way that the British will not.


Next, we will watch “Story of India: Meeting of Two Oceans”, chapters 4-6 to learn
more about the Mughal Empire in India.

For homework, read and take notes (on a separate piece of paper) on the Mughal Empire in India (section 3 - p.516-521).

Sharing of Influential People

Today we will share what we have learned about the Influential People of South Asia.

Under your class's document, enter what you find to be the most interesting 1-2 facts about your person. Once everyone has entered their facts, read through the list.


Next, we will view each other's images related to these people.

From the list of facts and the images: What stands out to you? What do you find surprising? How does this impact your perceptions of this region?

Once we have finished sharing, we will move onto our introduction to Islam and Hinduism and the influence these religions have had on the region.

For homework:
Watch and take detailed notes on The five major world religions - John Bellaimey.
(It's only 11 min. It's a little boring but very informative, and will give you a good basis for what we are going to talk about next week!)

This week, we will be learning about some of the people who have had the greatest impact on South Asia in recent times. These people are politicians, actors, social activists, etc. First individually, and then as a class, we will learn more about these people and the impact they have had.




We will work on this in class on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The project is due on Friday. You will bring your visual and your written portion to class; you must also upload your written portion to turnitin.com.

Activity Points Update

As many of you know, there is a planned student walk-out next Wed., 3/14. Although I don't know how many students will be involved, I have decided to try to reschedule Mrs. Kimura's discussion of her life in the internment camps. Because of this, I have extended the due date for all activity points to Monday, 3/19. I will update when I have more information about when Mrs. Kimura will visit.

Asia Rising

Today we will continue our discussion of the Korean War, focusing on the attempts to reunify Korean families.
Next, we will watch the first 30 min. of the video Asia Rising, and complete the viewing questions as we watch.

HW: Highlight and annotate “The Chinese Civil War” on (p. 240-242) and answer the questions on  (CP p.244-245).

The test of the second half of this unit will be next Thursday3/15 (Period 2) and Friday, 3/16.

Trying to reunite families divided by the Korean War has been an issue since the end of the war, and time is running out for these families.

The Dropping of the Atomic Bomb


Today we will continue discussing the dropping of the atomic bomb. We will read the leaflet that was dropped throughout Hiroshima prior to the dropping of the atomic bomb, and we will also discuss various opinions related to that decision.

If time remains, we will begin our discussion the internment of Japanese American by studying Executive Order 9066 (CP p.228 ).

HW: Complete the assignment White Light Black Rain for Tues. The film is 1 hr 25 min long minus the 10 min section you will skip. The assignment should take about 1:30-1:45. (I apologize that this is different than I mentioned in class)

The Letter to Queen Victoria and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

Today, we will read and discuss the letter the Chinese Emperor sent to Queen Victoria (CP p.194-197).

We will then continue the powerpoint on the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

HW: Create a two-sided visual to represent:
  1. China and the World - 1400
  2. China and the World - 1850
Your drawing should be done by hand on a piece of computer paper divided in two. You are being symbolic in your drawing, not literally drawing a map of China and the rest of the world.

If the world had 100 people, and intro to Chinese culture, geography and history

Today we will try to get a sense of the world we live in by shrinking it down to 100 people, and looking at some surprising numbers.

We will also get organized for 3rd quarter by switching over the binders to the East Asia Unit. I would recommend keeping your papers from first semester, but you can feel free to keep them at home.

Our discussion of last night's homework will help us understand the danger of "positive stereotypes". 

We will discuss "Societal and Institutional Differences" between China and the United States (CP p.182).

Finally, we will complete the East Asia Map assignment (CP. 184-186).

For homework:
Carefully read the article "The Chinese Want Their Art Back" and answer the following questions:

  1. What do you learn about China's past from this article?
