The Dropping of the Atomic Bomb


Today we will continue discussing the dropping of the atomic bomb. We will read the leaflet that was dropped throughout Hiroshima prior to the dropping of the atomic bomb, and we will also discuss various opinions related to that decision.

If time remains, we will begin our discussion the internment of Japanese American by studying Executive Order 9066 (CP p.228 ).

HW: Complete the assignment White Light Black Rain for Tues. The film is 1 hr 25 min long minus the 10 min section you will skip. The assignment should take about 1:30-1:45. (I apologize that this is different than I mentioned in class)

The Road to Pearl Harbor

What gets included in our historical narrative, and what gets excluded? We will discuss this question as it relates to the 1936 Olympics: "The Century: America's Time" 1936-1941: Over the Edge (45 secs - 4:20 min.)

We will also look at what led Japan to the decision to attack Pearl Harbor by discussing “Road to Pearl Harbor”

Today we will read. “Comparing Viewpoints” (CP p.202) and continue our discussion of the cultural differences between China and the West. We will also discuss the historic relationship between China, Korea, and Japan, and the Japanese response to the Opium War


Period 4
Today we will the Chinese Emperor's Letter to Queen Victoria. We will also finish the Powerpoint on the fall of the Qing Dynasty

For HW: Read “Comparing Viewpoints” (CP p.202), and answer questions 4-7 on a separate piece of paper.

The test over the first half of this unit will be on Wed. 2/14 for both classes.

The Letter to Queen Victoria and the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

Today, we will read and discuss the letter the Chinese Emperor sent to Queen Victoria (CP p.194-197).

We will then continue the powerpoint on the Fall of the Qing Dynasty

HW: Create a two-sided visual to represent:
  1. China and the World - 1400
  2. China and the World - 1850
Your drawing should be done by hand on a piece of computer paper divided in two. You are being symbolic in your drawing, not literally drawing a map of China and the rest of the world.

The test over the first half of this unit will be on Wed. 2/14.

Introduction to Ancient China

Today we will begin discussing the culture, values, and history of ancient China to try to understand what made China into the country it is today.

Working in the groups, you will read and organize the information from the sections below in order to teach your classmates the content from your section.
