In-class essay

You have the period to complete your essay.

A few reminders:
  • You may use your hand-written outline while completing the essay. You must hand-in the outline at the end of the period once you have uploaded the essay. Be sure your name is on your outline.
  • Your google doc should be the only tab open while you are writing the essay. You may not open any other tabs.
  • At the end of the period, open a second tab in order to turn the assignment on in turnitin.com
  • If you have extended time, you must still upload your essay at the end of the period. You will use your additional time to complete the essay at the start of the next class period.

If the world had 100 people, and intro to Chinese culture, geography and history

Today we will try to get a sense of the world we live in by shrinking it down to 100 people, and looking at some surprising numbers.

We will also get organized for 3rd quarter by switching over the binders to the East Asia Unit. I would recommend keeping your papers from first semester, but you can feel free to keep them at home.

Our discussion of last night's homework will help us understand the danger of "positive stereotypes".

We will discuss "Societal and Institutional Differences" between China and the United States (CP p.182).

Finally, we will complete the East Asia Map assignment (CP. 184-186).

For homework:
Carefully read the article "The Chinese Want Their Art Back" and answer the following questions:

  1. What do you learn about China's past from this article?
  2. What do you learn about China in the present from this article?
Please upload your answers to turnitin.com

We will also begin our East Asia Unit by acknowledging the stereotypes we currently have of this region.

For homework, read Dispensing with Model Portrait, Finding Truth. On a separate piece of paper, reflect on this person's story. Include a discussion of what this teaches us about “positive stereotypes”?
